China’s Stainless Steel Exports Hit 2026 High in September

Time : 2026-10-21

China’s stainless steel exports reached approximately 454,600 tonnes in September 2026, the highest monthly volume of the year, according to Chinese customs data. Shipments rose 2% from August and 8.6% from a year earlier. Imports moved in the opposite direction month on month, falling 10.7% to approximately 125,800 tonnes, although they remained 4.6% above September 2025.

The September export high contrasts with the cumulative performance. From January through September, China exported approximately 3,350,800 tonnes of stainless steel, down 432,000 tonnes from the same period a year earlier. Cumulative imports totaled approximately 1,140,200 tonnes.

A stronger September, with a cumulative shortfall still to close

The monthly and cumulative figures describe different aspects of export performance. September shipments exceeded both the previous month and the year-earlier level, but that improvement did not erase the decline across the first nine months. The figures support a stronger monthly shipment picture; they do not yet establish a sustained recovery in export volumes.

For exporters and businesses handling overseas deliveries, the immediate question is whether the higher shipment volume will continue. A single month’s increase does not establish that new orders, shipment schedules and subsequent deliveries will maintain the same pace. Further monthly trade figures would help show whether September marks a lasting improvement or a temporary concentration of shipments.

The import figures also require a distinction between time frames: September volumes fell from August while remaining above their year-earlier level. These movements alone do not establish a broader contraction in domestic demand or a shift toward domestic supply. Product composition and the persistence of changes in import volumes would matter when assessing the implications for procurement and competition.
